A Roman blind is a simple-looking piece of furniture with a surprising amount going on behind the fabric — a cord system running through rings, up through a headrail, and out to a chain or cleat mechanism that lifts and folds the blind evenly. When any one part of that system fails, the whole blind can stop working properly.

The headrail houses the mechanism and guides the cords — if it's warped, loose or the fixings have failed, the blind can bind, hang unevenly or lift on one side only.
The rings on the back of the fabric guide the cords and create the fold as the blind rises. Detached rings, worn spools or failed rear attachments are a common cause of a blind folding unevenly or not at all.
